Abstract
Preservation and restoration of buildings can be roughly categorized into two, renovation and conversion. Like many Asian countries that have developed rapidly since the modern era, many modern buildings have disappeared because of economic or political judgments. However, in this two decades many changes have happened even in Korea, in many cases they have been converted into cultural space such as museum and exhibition space. This study is to track and to analyze the process of archiutectural conversion, MMCA Seoul. As a conclusion, the major impact factors are as follows. (1) Historical background of the site through Choseon Era, Modern to the present. (2) Political background including the President, government offices, the museum and citizens at the time. (3) Effectiveness of legal system for Registered Cultural Property. (4) Modern characteristics of the original Gyeongseong Medical School Hospital. (5) Operation of competitions selecting an appropriate architect for the conversion. (6) Limits of the architect’s role in the whole project caused by unreasonable schedule and related laws.
