Abstract
The space demanded these days is not fixed, but a place of possibility through the diversity of the people who live. According to architect Sou Fujimoto, "Incomplete and ambiguous spaces can be transformed into open spaces with more possibilities than modern architecture that seeks independence and completeness.” He explains his theory and the motifs or influences in his work, expressing a belief in architecture that creates relationships and communicates through incompletion. This study analyzes the work and unique perspective of Sou Fujimoto. We identify the various ways he creates incomplete architecture, and explore its characteristics to understand the possibilities and relationships. Architectural incompletion by form are created by decomposition and recombination, angle changes, and disorderly layout. Architectural incompletion by function are made by one and multiple places, space with potential function, and unintended space. Incompletion by existence are made by relative relationship between architecture and the environment, relative relationship between architecture and users. It pursues incompletion rather than architectural completeness and is, therefore, both a good stimulus and reference for future researchers and architects.
