Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand activity and materiality of the surface layers. Surface layers discussed in this study imply multi-layers of materials with spatial depth where activity may occur between interior and exterior of a building. Current studies on surface and cladding in architecture focus mostly on the phenomenal perception of its materiality, resulting surface of the building separates itself from its interior materials and space. However, materials arranged in surface layers creates enmeshed experience and activities (both teleological related and non-teleological activities) within the space of the surface layers. Those materials used in surface layers may be applied to define teleological activities, but at the same time, they may arise phenomenal senses (non-teleological activities) in a human body. Such understanding of the activity through human body in the surface layers will expand one’s understanding of the relationship between the interior and exterior materials in a building.
