Abstract
The research has explored Lebanese artists and their controversial practices. More specifically, it investigates the causes and effects of Lebanese artists’ practices that are closely connected to the issues of war and trauma, cultural and conflict memory, and archives and amnesia within the terms of postmodernism and post-colonialism. It also examines how artists accept and understand the complex concept of Lebanon, and represent their traumatic experiences and complicated identities in their works. Lebanese Civil War, from 1975 to 1990, was a multifaceted conflict between neighboring countries Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iran and Iraq, the boundary between muslim Lebanese group and Maronite christian, and the power relationship between the West and Middle East. As a victim of the Cold War, Lebanese long-term civil war became a proxy war between super powers. Although the war destroyed Lebanon and people’s lives, world media hardly paid attention to the Lebanese situation. However, scholars like Noam Chomsky and Edward Said have focused on the issues of Lebanon and Middle East and have sought uneasy solutions to bring peace and coexistence. Currently, Lebanese artists have actively shown their works at international exhibitions and biennials, representing the experiences of exile, dislocation, displacement and loss through the complicated meanings of religions and politics, and resisting the issues of recorded history, archives and memories. Through the process of confronting the stereotypical Islamic concepts and lebanese situations, artists deconstruct and reconstruct the image of Lebanon and cross the boundary between Islamic realms. Therefore, this research, The Boundary of Islamic Realm: Controversial Practices of Lebanese Artists, gives critical analysis of the work from Lebanese artists and suggests multiple directions of approach to the issues of religions, nations and cultures.
