- Abstract
- In this study, we sought to better understand recent trends in the use of parametric methods for building envelope design. Ten representative projects are selected for the case study. We found that there is a definite trend in designing parametric facades by comparing their formational intent, characteristics, benefits, and effects. Earlier projects were more motivated by a desire to create aesthetically pleasing and geometrically complex facades, whereas recent buildings were designed with functional purposes in mind, emphasizing the use of performing envelopes. We conclude that, first, parametric facades have many functional purposes, including view control, noise reduction, improved lighting and ventilation, energy efficiency, better material distribution, and providing different structural benefits. Second, parametric facades have been considered as intelligent envelope designs as they have the justification of having improved functions built to them. Third, they have evolved over time to reflect the idiosyncratic characteristics of their context and culture.
