Abstract
In this paper, I give the semantics and pragmatic properties of ‘-eya’conditional. I claim that a conditional with ‘-eya’ means that the antecedent clause is a downward-bound sufficient condition for the consequent clause. And in a conditional with ‘-eya’, the consequent clause is a topic. From this we can explain why an ‘-eya’ conditional does not allow other moods than the declarative and interrogative. This also explains why a conditional with ‘-eya’ does not allow an interrogative with a wh-phrase in the consequent clause. A conditional with ‘-eya’does not allow a modal operator used to ask about the hearer’s willingness to accept the speaker’s offering. An ‘-eya’ conditional can be used with a concessive meaning, but its semantics is the same as that of a normal conditional use. The only difference is the expected result determined by the context, which is reflected in the ordering of scalar alternaives for the antecedent clause.
