- Abstract
- This study investigates the identification of English accent across native speakers of English and Korean, Japanese, Chinese learners of English. For this study, a paragraph of English sentence was read by 8 male or female speakers from America, Korea, Japan, and China. And 4 different evaluator groups of American, Korean, Japananese, and Chinese listeners were asked to identify the speakers' native language and evaluate the speakers' goodness of English pronunciation. The results showed that all evaluator groups demonstrated an accuracy of 100% or close to 100% for the pronunciation of native speakers of English and identified English accents of the speakers of the same origin as their own more accurately than the other groups. The results demonstrated that the American evaluator group indicates a much lower accuracy in identifying Korean, Japanese, and Chinese accents than the other evaluator groups. This suggests that exposure to foreign accents plays an important role in identifying foreigners' English accents.
