Abstract
This study investigates Korean college students’ perceptions of English learning in Korea. In a qualitative research format, the study interviewed 18 college students in a semi-structured interview setting with the topics: 1) their English learning history; 2) present study methods; 3) needs and goals for English proficiency; and 4) future plans and wishes for English study. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed for themes. The analysis identified two main themes: ‘defeated learner agency’ and ‘institutional constraints.’ It is argued that the participants perceive their learner agency as being significantly constrained by the system of various institutions in society, which does not value process over product, and pressures learners to comply in English learning and its assessment. The participants, also, do not project positively their perspectives of gaining agency in future English learning, however with a varying degree among them. Suggestions are made for future research.
