- Abstract
- Under the circumstances that museums play an important role serving as educational spaces for public culture and arts, children's museums, having underage children as their main visitors and serving the same purpose, take the futuristic responsibility accordingly and the needs for their existence grow in more communities as well. However, contrary to the growing needs for children's museums, the number of such facilities is far smaller than expected and academic research by noticeable professionals is unsatisfactory yet. In this paper, firstly through theoretical approach and research on the societal role and function of children's museums, the needs for their existence is confirmed and secondly the status quo of children's museums in Korea is looked into to better understand the goals of existing children's museums and thirdly by comparing and analyzing the themes of exhibits and the presentation methods, it is aimed at raising probable issues on establishment of children's museums and providing those staff members concerned with fundamental materials on future planning and operation. Through this research, it is confirmed that most domestic children's museum, in stead of being independent entities having their own integral themes, are operated as affiliated entities, rather having separate themes, under the auspices of parental museums. Also, in order to meet the societal needs for children's museums and their continuous growth, it is confirmed that development of visitor-focused new exhibit themes and floor planning tailored for children is necessary, and to serve this purpose, diversified and systematic research is in high demand.
