- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to elucidate different phonological structures of diphthong, based on the analysis of prosodic structures regulated by mora. The main focus is set onto the prosodic asymmetry between on-glide diphthong and off-glide diphthong. All the segment-based notions such as single segment, complex segment, consonantal glide, and vocalic glide, presented in the previous research, have been deserted in the present study. Instead, it is argued that we could capture fundamental phonological properties of diphthongs, only approaching from the prosodic point of view.
The prosodic difference between on-glide diphthong and off-glide diphthong is simple and clear. The former has a single mora, whereas the latter has two morae. Such a quantitative difference can be detected in a variety of phonological phenomena such as quantitiy-sensitive stress in English, the distribution of long vowel in Korean diphthongs, compensatory lengthening in Korean hiatus resolution, coalescence of diphthongs and glide deletion in Korean, and glide formation & diphthongization in Middle Korean. All the analyzed quantity-related prosodic processes support our assumption that glide would have a different prosodic status, depending on its sequential relation with the syllabic vowel. When preceded by vowel, it is moraic, while when followed by vowel, it is non-moraic.
