Abstract
Discussions on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) are now receiving attention in the design field. The AI technology boom has given designers a sense of professional crisis, faced with AI design systems that already exist in the design field, and have begun to threaten the status of designers to a certain extent. Designers need to reposition their professional roles and find reasons why they can’t be replaced. In this context, this study articulated the new role of the designer by the core competencies that designers need to cultivate in the age of artificial intelligence. To accomplish this research objective, first, we clarify the new role of designers in the age of artificial intelligence and the core competencies they must master. Secondly, based on the new role and core competencies of the designer, put forward suggestions for the education of future designers. As methods of research, In the early stage of research, this research collected and comparatively analyzed the previous research and literature on the design and artificial intelligence for this research, trying to sort out and analyze the history of the development of design and intelligent technology and explore its correlation. Then, after using various forms of AI design systems, we compared whether those systems are widely used in the design field and their functional state. Eight representative systems were selected for in-depth research. Analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of these AI systems and the Utilization scope in design activities. The final results in this paper give insights that in the age of artificial intelligence, people will enter the age of true “man-computer symbiosis”. The emerging AI design system can only help solve the problem of repetitiveness and formulation in the design process, play the role of executor, replacing the designer’s primary stage’s repetitive design works. The designer will assume the role of the planner responsible for the creative thinking part of the design activity. According to the research results, this paper proposes that to assume a new role in the age of artificial intelligence, designers must possess four core competencies (interdisciplinary thinking ability, social observation ability, judgment ability, and ability to cooperate with advanced technology), and also puts forward some suggestions for future design education on how to cultivate designers who can be qualified for new roles. With this research, we can confirm the new role and essential core competencies of designers in the age of artificial intelligence, which will play a crucial reference in cultivating the ability of new generation designers and the development of design education.
