- Abstract
- This study investigates the duration of homorganic nasal-plosive clusters which occur between identical vowels in Korean and speculates its phonological implications on place assimilation. Durations were measured of the preceding vowel, nasal-plosive clusters, and the following vowel of the words in the form of /aNCa/, where N stands for a nasal and C for a stop. The results showed that duration of the consonant clusters were shortest for homorganic nasal-plosive sequences regardless of the phonation types of the plosives. The same is true of the duration of the entire word. This study provides concrete acoustic data supporting the argument that place assimilation is caused by the speaker's intention to minimize articulatory gestures.
