- Abstract
- The tradition of the native color of each country of the world is based on national emotion, environment and soil. To make this tradition to be public, the current of time such as the pursuit of value, the formation of national sympathy and absorption to the culture area should be accompanied more than unconditional advancement.
The purpose of this paper is to recognize such a revival as the flow of the times, and analyze whether Korean traditional image has been well expressed through proper utilization of Korean traditional and popular color in public streets. So, case study has been conducted by using past and present sample : the past sample is the patchwork wrapping-cloth and Insa-dong. To measure color characteristics of patchwork wrapping-cloth and Insa-dong street, macro-colorimetric method was used with the NCS color system at a close range. Results of research and analysis say that wide range of colors without boundaries, from low-chroma colors to high-chroma colors, were used for making patchwork wrapping-cloth of Joseon. The distribution style of colors on signboards was similar to that of patchwork wrapping-cloth, and this is the result to heighten the attention effect. However, I found that limited low-chroma colors were used in Insa-dong street as used in general urban streets.
This research paper will be used as basic document to arrange the method to express Korean image subjective in the public street after researching the colors of diverse objects in common people’s life starting from patchwork wrapping-cloth. In addition, I will develop this research to the research that suggests the specific color distribution to show the Korean image in the traditional space.
