- Abstract
- The present study investigates intrinsic vowel duration and the effect of the voicing identity of the preceding obstruents on the duration of the following vowels in Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia. For this study, durations of the vowels /i, e, a, o, u, ə/ were measured from a speech corpus of 30 male native speakers of Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Indonesia (15 each). The results showed that vowels are longer in Bahasa Indonesia than in Bahasa Malaysia, before voiced obstruents than before voiceless ones, and in the utterance-initial position than in the utterance-medial position. The results also showed that higher vowels (/i, ə, u/) are shorter than lower vowels (/e, a, o/) with the only exception that /a/ was shorter than /ə/ in the utterance-initial position. This pattern roughly coincides with the phonetic universal that vowel duration depends on the degree of opening.
