Abstract
As unstandardized deconstructive thinking emerged in line with the collapse of dualistic thinking since the postmodernism in the late 20th century, modern people are longing for something new that may give psychological and emotional comfort. This phenomenon appears even in the analysis of costume transitions. Those opportunities that Oriental thinking began to gain attention as spiritual aspects began to be highlighted in this era of materialism led to this thinking. The belief system of eumyang (陰陽, the harmony of the positive and the negative) asserts that all items and natural phenomena in the cosmos have necessarily their other side in addition to what is easily perceived, and the positive and the negative always coexist for the harmony of the cosmos, which means they are both valuable. Under this background, acknowledging that it is necessary to discuss the positive and the negative, which is the first step toward the belief system of eumyang, this study aims to make a new approach to and make an attempt to interpret costume through the thinking of the negative, not the analysis of the positive costume shape. For this, the types of the negative (shade and shadow) that are different depending on the costume shapes are categorized into 4, and the formative characteristics that are represented according to the four types are analyzed. Recognizing that this Oriental perspective is critical for the future design, the researcher expects that this study will be helpful in realizing what is the right direction in the future and practising it as a means to enhancing the value of Oriental spirit.
