Abstract
The optimum antenna separation of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for an indoor wireless communication channel is retrieved from average-sense channel capacities which are simulated using a three-dimensional ray-tracing (RT) technique. The RT method is used to simulate the ray paths and path losses of the reflected, transmitted, and diffracted rays in the indoor channel, and consequently compute the channel capacities of the MIMO system for various receiver positions, antenna polarizations, and antenna separations. It is found that the optimum antenna-separation for maximum channel capacity of this channel is 0.33 wavelength. © 2008 IEEE.
