- Abstract
- Revitalization of architecture is about redeveloping of aged modern architecture, and the issues regarding regeneration are gradually expanding in South Korea. A revitalized architecture is required to be capable of preserving the memory of the past that the building holds, and its memory has to be sustained in the present. The purpose of this study is to figure out guidance and a design method for architecture revitalization by analyzing the cases of recently redeveloped architectures in South Korea. The analysis is done based on the theory of duration, posited by Henri Bergson, which perceives time and space as a constant flow of duration. Industrial facilities that were recently rebuilt into cultural spaces are selected as the cases for this study, and they are analyzed on the basis of the terms, such as image, mobility, rhythm and memory, which signify H. Bergson’s notion of duration. Also, the research is carried on to study how the architectural experience is obtained within the redeveloped space based on his theory. On the whole, a revitalization of architecture in the perspective of Bergson’s philosophy on duration is about redeveloping the space into a place where the elements of time, mobility of memory and images interact with our physical body. A great significance of this study is in the findings that space can entail various interpretations, and the sense of space can be gained by experiencing the space with our body.
