- Abstract
- Yeom, Jae-Il. 2007. Comparisons of Presuppositions and Scalar Implicatures in their Projection. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 7-4, 645-674. It is well-known that presuppositions are projected from the sites where they are triggered to take certain scopes with respect to other operators, but the projection of scalar implicatures has only recently been discussed actively. They show similar properties in some cases, but different properties in other cases. It would be interesting to see why they do so. In this paper, I first discuss how they are different, especially when they arise in belief contexts. I claim that the differences come from the fact that scalar implicatures come from the other part of the sentence than the scalar term itself, while presuppositions come from the meanings of the triggers themselves for proper interpretation of these. This difference gives rise to different consequences of binding relations. If no binding relations are involved, the two projections show similar properties.
