- Abstract
- Lee Seon-yeong. 2007. A study on Stabilization of New Words in Korean. Korean Semantics, 24. This paper aims to discuss the characteristics of new words which is stabilized in Korean. I have analyzed 408 words among '2002 New words' report of The National Institute of the Korean language, and find 298 words have existed until now and 110 words disappeared in 2007. The above 298 new words are concerned with foreign cultures and systems, computer, internet and cellular phone, new group and people, new idea, new products and new businesses, etc.The characteristics of the new words that have been used until now can be described as these. First, in case the new word is a blend, the component of it is likely to be combined with any other word, and create new word. The component is usually a latter one of the blend. Second, the new words have clear meanings. Some words which had entirely different meaning from the original meaning easily disappeared because the new meaning collided with the original meaning. Third, the new words have often expanded the field of its usages.
