Abstract
Junyon Kim (Hongik U)The aim of this paper is not so much to critique Steinbeck’s view of race asto interrogate the way in which an overarching American identity can bereconceived against the multicultural backdrop of his California novels. Forthe purpose of reconceptualization of race relations in his fiction, I take ahybrid critical stance to rely much on the New Historicist, multiculturalist andpostcolonialist viewpoints. Reconsidering the color allegory in Pearlfromthese perspectives, I interpret the desire for the exchange value of white pearlsas a possessive dream for whiteness.
