Abstract
Kim, Jong-Kyoo. 2006. 8. Prosodic Units and Vowel Shortening. Korean Linguistics 32, 53-89. This study aims to elucidate the phonological motivation of vowel shortening in Korean, based on the role of prosodic units. Vowel shortening in Korean is analyzed as three different shortening processes, all of which have their own independent phonological motivation and operate at different levels of prosodic constituents. Operating at the level of the foot, trochaic shortening is motivated by the complete parsing of syllables into feet. Closed syllable shortening is motivated by the restriction on syllable weight, that is, bimoraic maximality. By the operation of closed syllable shortening at the level of the syllable, a potential trimoraic syllable is eliminated. The motivation of open syllable shortening is to prohibit a hiatus construction with uneven quantity such V:V, operating only at the segmental level, forming a conspiracy relation
