- Abstract
- Recently, as science museums are considered as an important educational field, the exhibition layouts of the museums are more differentiated more than ever. The purpose of this research is to investigate visitors' experience processes depending on the exhibition layouts of science museums: 1) learning type layout and 2) experience type layout. In other words, it is to understand how the viewing behavior of visitors is influenced by the characteristics of science museums' exhibition layouts and media. The results of this study are as follows:First, explorative viewing behavior at a learning type of exhibition space was shown as a result of judging a spatial direction, whereas the viewing behavior at an experiential exhibition space was observed in order to collect visual information of exhibits, or to decide a viewing order.Second, talking viewing behavior (T) at a learning type was observed when judging a spatial direction and involving more active viewing behavior (V), whereas the viewing behavior at an experiential type was observed when involving relatively passive viewing behavior (V').Third, visitors at an experiential exhibition space acquired prior information by observing other visitors' operation or participation, and then provided information about what kinds of action they took.As discussed above, when analyzing visitors' experience in terms of exhibition layouts, overall usage distribution or condition should be studied by a trace approach. Viewing behavior can be analyzed by classifying the contents of exhibition media and the visual openness of exhibition space. Therefore, when these two methods are attempted reciprocally, more desirable results of analysis can be obtained.
