Abstract
It is difficult to find urban blocks with concentrated wooden structures in the contemporary Korean urban environment. The study, therefore, takes the case of Kahoe-Dong in Seoul where there still exist a great number of Korean traditional wooden houses and residences. The vicinity has been designated as a historic preservation area by the government in 1983. In 1994, however, the building code has been relaxed to allow to build the structures of heights up to 15 meters in the vicinity. As a consequence, many multi-family housing has been added in the area to increase the general building density yet lacking the adequate consideration against the fire, earthquake, and other possible urban disasters. The study, in this context, tries to closely investigate a sector of the area and analyzes the easiness for the inhabitant to escape in case of urban emergency, especially, using the computer algorithm called TOSHA.
