- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of children's psychological characteristics on space design by studying the relationship between space and children's psychological characteristics. Children's mental status in the medical space is easily affected. This study presents the direction of the design of waiting room for children's hospital, with emphasis on the importance of the psychological characteristics of children in space design. This study first explores the theoretical background of child psychology through literature analysis. Then, the relationship between children's psychological characteristics and the elements of the waiting room are investigated, and use this as a framework for analyzing the waiting rooms of six children's hospitals in Korea, China and the United States. In selecting the cases, two cases in Korea, two cases in China, and two cases in the United States, with different construction period and scale were selected. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the status of children's hospitals by region, period, and scale. The factors influencing the design of children's hospital waiting space are functional, psychological, and behavioral aspects. That is, to provide a comfortable waiting room environment, to introduce visual and tactile elements, and to provide circulation and space design considering child's cognitive level and behavioral characteristics. Based on the analysis of the cases, design suggestions for improving the waiting space of the children 's hospital are to create a color and lighting environment that relieves the child's tense emotion, to introduce a guidance system considering the child's cognitive level, to provide space arrangement considering patient's family, and to provide furniture considering the size of the children's body. In designing the waiting room of a children's hospital, it is important to relate the psychological characteristics and design elements of the child. Furthermore, a detailed spatial analysis of more cases will provide a more generalized design guidelines of children's hospital waiting space.
