Abstract
The number of public library in Korea is steadily increasing, because its function have been expanded to multi-cultural & educational center in addition to it's fundamental function of archiving and delivering information. Since the diverse people with different ages and abilities are using public libraries, the concept of universal design is an important issue. However, universal design guidelines and standards for children users are relatively rare. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish the standards of universal design for a children users in public library. The study has been conducted by analyzing and comparing two existing public libraries with a children's room in Seoul, and they are remodeled based on universal design. The results are as follows: first, the aspects of convenience and safety in universal design are considering physical dimensions and removing obstacles for children users. And the aspects comfortability and selectability in universal design should be more carefully applied considering children's behavior and understanding their psychology. Second, it has to be considered from the state of schematic design. And third, the space applied the universal design has to be monitored and evaluated continuously in order to establish more specific and in-depth standards.
