Abstract
Understand the communication of the melancholy gender - around the female fan of Hallyu. Sociology has long ignored the importance of melancholia in understanding and explaining female creativity and fandom, especially on their communicative process of sharing motivations and knowledge of foreign culture among women. This paper discusses how a sociobiological analysis of melancholia can unpack the nature of female universalism toward appreciating and learning K-pop and Korean culture. This paper finds that female universalism is a generally accepted understanding among loyal fans of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, that gendered melancholia, which enables them to suppress the sadness of losing a desired social gender in their relationship with significant others, in fact leads them to depressive behavioral consequences that are necessary in achieving the virulent desire to learn socially disparaging foreign subcultures, such as K-pop and Korean culture.
