- Abstract
- Providing a satisfactory multimedia application service in networking environments requires an effective media delivery mechanism. However, a common network such as Internet does not provide a guaranteed network bandwidth to accommodate multimedia service in a reliable fashion. A typical approach to assist multimedia delivery is via buffer management in end system. Buffer management techniques are classified into two categories; one is adapting the changes in network load and the other is smoothing the bandwidth requirement. The former may cause a serious loss of service quality and the latter Is not able to adapt to the dynamic network condition. In this paper we propose a bandwidth adaptive smoothing which is adaptive to the dynamic networks and also supports better quality of service by smoothing the bandwidth requirement. Simulation results with a prerecorded MPEG video show that the quality of video delivered is improved with the proposed technique.
