Abstract

Currently, our life is showing a fast-consumerism with rapidly changing trends. In particular, although various types of furniture are being released, furniture that has been pushed out of the trend goes to landfills before they are used up. In this reality, design is sometimes seen as a form of inducing consumption by stimulating consumers’ purchase desires. So, it is time to emphasize the necessity of sustainable design and reconsider its value. Therefore, this study aid to examine how sustainability is progressing in the field of furniture design, and to consider the role of designers for circular economy and the direction of furniture design in the era where eco-frinedliness must be practiced. This study begins by redefining what sustainability is. And the characteristics are extrated through how the global interest in environmetal proctec tion has been linked to sustainable development. Through this, the researcher examines the po tential of sustainable design. Based on this, various furniture design cases from the 1990s to the present are investigated. In conclusion, the researcher analyzes the characteristics of furniture design with sustainability for each age and derives keywords for the direction of sustainability. Through this, we expect that sustainable design will play a role in the future society.
