Abstract
Soban, a small table from the Joseon Dynasty, is Korea's representative wooden furni ture that preserves the lifestyle of our ancestors and Korean aesthetics. However, due to changes in the living environment, the demand for it had decreased significantly, and it has be come a furniture that is difficult to find in residential spaces. Therefore, this study intends to re interpret the traditional values and unique functions of small table ‘soban’ to suit the lifestyle of modern people, and to suggest a new design direction. The range of the case study was examined from soban in the Joseon Dynasty to the present. Based on this, the researcher searched for young designers and craftsmen who reinterpret soban in a modern way and analysed their works. The modern soban proposed by the researcher has a smaller size than the traditional soban. And it was made possible to use it as a tray or a deco plate. Also, when placed in the kitchen, it serves as a beautiful objet. The top and body are made of wood, and stainless steel is at tached to the top surface. This metal serves to provide strength and hygiene, etc. There are two sizes, rectangle and square, and the variety of surface texture and colors of metal gives consum ers a wider range of choices. Most of the manufacturing process was aimed at shortening the manufacturing time and reducing the cost by using digital equipment. The researcher tried to proposed new furniture that can be frequently encountered in daily life by reinterpreting the tra ditional elements and values that are disappearing. Through this design attempt, the researcher hope that it will be an opportunity to rethink the modernization of tradition and identity, and to publicize the excellence of Korean traditional culture, including soban and wooden furniture
