Abstract
Sophie Calle’s conceptional art project Exquisite Pain (1999∼2003) takes the form of an autobiographical documentary consisting of photographs and writings. Initially produced as an installation, Exquisite Pain transforms into a book format, and later into a storytelling performance play entering the theater to meet various audiences, readers, and audiences. I argue that mixing genres of literary and visual art, and the storytelling format of Calle’s work enables multifaceted and multilayered interpretation and reception, and analyzes it based on psychoanalytic discourses on trauma and memory. Part one introduces the structure and narrative of the book format of Exquisite Pain. Part two examines Call’s work in the context of modernist theories of media and the logic of the post-medium condition of Rosalind Krauss. Calle tells her story repeatedly, writes it down to overcome painful memories and trauma, and listens to the memories of traumatic experiences of others. Accordingly, part three discusses Carl’s work from the perspective of psychoanalysis, such as trauma, repetition compulsion, and memory. Exquisite Pain is Calle’s storytelling, but it invaginates 36 different versions of her own stories, and 36 different stories of others. Her text is further provided for a content of storytelling performance leaving the author’s hands. Therefore, Chapter 4 focuses on the power of ‘storytelling’ in Calle’s work.
