This study analyzed aspects of medical communication by observing the clinical process of practitioners in a Korean hospital. The research findings can be summarized as follows: first, the clinical process was categorized into five stages—pre-diagnosis, start of diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment, completion of diagnosis, and Korean medicine therapy. Second, the detailed medical practices of practitioners were categorized into common and specific elements according to each stage of diagnosis. Third, the characteristics of communication in each stage of diagnosis were identified. In the “pre-diagnosis” stage, practitioners demonstrated a friendly attitude and greeted the patient. At the “start of diagnosis” stage, patient-centered questioning and active listening were observed. Furthermore, in the “diagnosis and treatment” stage, explanations of the patient’s condition and guidance they received on the treatment process were analyzed. Last, in the “Korean medicine therapy” stage, communication explaining acupuncture procedures or information about acupuncture stimulation was observed. This study recommends several strategies to enhance medical communication based on these findungs. These include actively listening and empathizing with the patient’s expressions, developing the ability to provide easy-to-understand explanations to bridge the gap between expert doctors and non-expert patients, and providing related information that can help patients understand their condition and make treatment decisions. The significance of this study is its analysis of the dialogue process in Korean medical consultations, which provides a concrete understanding of the clinical process. Additionally, the study draws educational implications for medical communication through conversation analysis.-
