- Abstract
- In recent years, with the increasing popularity of language learning mobile applications, the implementation of gamification principles has become crucial in the construction and design of these platforms. After analyzing theoretical aspects, this study delves into the basic gamification principles implemented in Duolingo and Rosetta Stone as Korean language learning applications, examining how reward systems, customization, and social interaction influence motivation among users. The study uses qualitative research methods to collect information from user’s perceptions and preferences regarding the gamification elements within both apps, including usability reviews and in-depth interviews to gather data. Findings indicated that most participants prefer game-based learning. For this reason it is important to understand that gamification plays an important role in UX design for the continued success of mobile language education platforms. One of the main challenges with gamification is that no single theory can fully explain how it works. Therefore, it is necessary to continue analyzing and providing insights to understand how gamification can motivate users when learning a language. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of basic gamification principles to offer further insights to educators, designers, and developers on how to optimize the use of gamification in UX design.
