- Abstract
- The definitive aim of this research is to investigate approaches to influence to aesthetic preference by perceptual organization based on compositional design within abstract art composition. In order to fulfil this aim, it measured the factors of aesthetic preference effect to increase perceptual organization such as structural framework, symmetry and location of salient element group. The result indicated that the compositional stimuli of geometric elements based on the even structural framework had higher aesthetic preference than the stimuli based on the random framework. In addition, the reflection symmetry had comparatively lower aesthetic preference than the asymmetry which changed locations of elements based on the same symmetry axis. However, these results indicated that as the factors to increase the perceptual organization were duplicated and applied, they did not continuously increase aesthetic preference. It was complementary with disorganization factors. That is, the stimuli, applied by two conditions of the factors to arouse strongly perceptual organization, had lower aesthetic preference than one stimulus out of two factors was applied. This result indicated that aesthetic experience of viewing on an artwork obtains simplicity of the first impression by perceptual organization; and, it leads the expressional characteristics of partially curious elements to explore every nook and corner to be rich. The strength of the perceptual organization does not match with the level of aesthetic preference. Therefore, aesthetic preference is decided by trading-off between the perceptual organization factors and demolishing factors.
