- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between form and subjectivity of meaning in some grammatical constructions. The results are as follows: First, in perceptive verbs and ideative verbs the sentences with a that-clause is more subjective in meaning than those with a to-infinitive phrase or a to be deleted sentences. Second, an adverb is more subjective than its synonymous prepositional phrase. Third, politically correct expressions (affirmative ones) which are longer in the number of syllables or words are more subjective than the shorter negative expressions. Lastly, in the contrast of the so-called light verb construction vs. one verb construction, the latter is more subjective than the former. To sum up what has been discussed so far, it may be said that long form is more subjective in meaning than short form.
