- Abstract
- Considering that the demand for well-designed libraries is increasing and that many architects are actively participating in design competitions for domestic libraries, it is necessary to have interest in designs of existing domestic libraries. The goal of this study is to establish a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of domestic library façade designs. For this purpose, framework for case analysis was established through theoretical study and facade designs of 58 domestic library cases were analyzed. It was found that there are 5 types of facade design; symmetrical balance of forms, contrast of forms, repetition of structures and windows, emphasis of structures, unification and change of forms and structures. Emphasis or repetition of colors, materials and textures, decorative elements, structures, etc. play a role in complementing or emphasizing the characteristics of each type. The architectural planning characteristics of several cases were examined and the correlation with the facade design was analyzed. Through this, it was expected that the visual connection with the outside and the publicity of the interior space have influence on facade designs. Architects designing libraries can refer to results of this research when seeking for new designs.
