Abstract
Derivatives of chitosan monomer and oligomer with antimicrobial activity were synthesized and characterized by means of FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. N-methylolacryamide (NMA) was reacted with the chitosan monomer, D-Glucosamine (Glu), and oligomer (COS) to provide double bonds which are supposed to be reacted in dental resin matrix and non-released from the matrix. Degree of reaction for Glu-NMA was 30 % at an optimum reaction condition; mole ratio of NMA to Glu = 3, reaction temperature = 70 oC, reaction time = 40 min, pH in acetic acid = 1.4. The degree of reaction of the Glu-NMA was increased to 117 % by a column elusion fractionation method. This means that more than one among the three reactive hydroxyl groups in Glu react to NMA. Glycidyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMAC) known to have antimicrobial property attached to chitosan oligomer (COS-GTMAC) at 60 oC for 24 h, followed by reacting to NMA (COS-GTMAC-NMA) at 50 oC for 12 h. Antimicrobial activity for staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus mutans was examined.
