- Abstract
- John Barth’s literary activities spanned a period of trying to overcome pre-modernity. He tried to escape the pre-modernity, which valued thought and the myth of identity. At that time literature also had to escape from the depleted copycat narrative of the same style that contained ideas. This paper aims to examine Barth’s reflective storytelling which reflects on the past literary traditions to solve the depletion of literature. In the text, the representative narrative techniques mainly used by storytelling are discussed. The first section turns on talking about the stories within stories. The second section treats with parody. The third section examines demythologization about the myth of identity. And the last section focuses on intertextuality and self-referentiality. This article concludes reflective storytelling can be regarded as main point in John Barth’s narrative techniques.
