Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the birth and death date, art activity, and art world of Pansori Mistress Gim-Hae Kim Rok- Ju who typical in the 1920s. The results are summarized as follows.First, Kim Rok-Ju was born on April 3, 1898 in Gim-Hae, Gyungnam Province, and died on January 10, 1928(December 18, 1927 by lunar calendar) at the age of 30 in Daegu. Her real name was Kim Im- Jeon. Today she is better known as Kim Rok-Ju rather than by her real name. Second, Kim Rok-Ju was taught by Kim Jeong-Mun at the age of ten, and became a Pansori Mistress after taught by Song Man- Gab in the mid-1910s. She once belonged to a professional kisaeng institution, the Dadong Kisaengjohap and Hannam Gwonbeon. She did a variety of performances with Lee Hwa-Jung-Seon, and later she was a teacher at the professional kisaeng institution, Dalseong Gwonbeon in Daegu. She became famous by having her Pansori recorded and broadcasted. Third, Kim Rok-Ju was considerably salient in artistic perfection in consideration of her short life. Especially, she was excellent in <Chunhyang-ga>, and her deonum is remarkable in <Pyunsichun>, <Sosangpalgyeong>, <Sarang-ga>, and <Jungtaryeong>. Kim Rok- Ju was a born singer, and her vocal sound was hard but beautiful. Her singing method was very strict in composition, her singing was extremely temperate and consistently of tong tone.
