- Abstract
- Purpose: This paper deals with a comparative efficiency of global retailers including Korean and Chinese distribution companies. The efficiency of Korean retailers who are in direct competition with global retailers are investigated and discussed in this paper.
Research design, data, and methodology: From the perspective of efficiency and its similarity, we examined total 15 global retailers which ranked global top 250 in 2012 based on based on DEA(data envelopment analysis) and similarity measure analysis.
Results: The result of our analysis clearly shows that an average effectiveness level of the Korean retailers was 33.9%, nearly half of the global retailers. And we also found that Korean retailers can be divided by two groups: assets and number of employee-based group (E-mart, Eland World, and GS Retail), assets, capital and number of employee-based group (Lotte Shopping).
Conclusions: Our results have important implications for strategy of input resources to maximize business effectiveness. The asset and capital-based efficiency of Korean retailers are extremely low. Furthermore, the similarity of using pattern of the resources in case of Korean retailers presents a great contrast to the best practice.
