Abstract
Taekwondo is one of the popular youth sports where participants learn both physical skills and positive characters. This study examined major difficulties Taekwondo coaches face while coaching youth participants, their instructional coping strategies with the difficulties, and the participants perceptions of the coaches’ coping strategies. A total of 97 Taekwondo instructors affiliated in community Taekwondo academies responded to open-ended questions regarding their coaching difficulties they face while coaching the youth and their coping behaviors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 42 boys and girls who regularly participate in Taekwondo lessons in order to explore their perceptions of their coaches coping behaviors when the coaches face difficulties. Analyses of data revealed that problems (34%) related to the participants were the most frequent difficulties. Other difficulties included actions of disturbance (20%), conflicts with their parents (19%), interpersonal problems among the participants (13%), and non-instruction issues (13%). Coaches’ instructional coping behavior included six categories: consulting with the participant, punishment, regulation of energy level, motivating, strict instruction, and accepting complaints. The participants felt that coaches’ instructional coping behaviors in difficulties were negative and wanted more frequent positive approaches such as encouragement, reinforcement, and specific feedback.
