- Abstract
- I in this paper traced and studied the deeds of Xu Biji(許必濟), an overseas Chinese merchant in Thailand who drifted in the coast of Korea in 1880.
There occured an accident that a ship of red head taking people from Chaozhou(潮州) and Thais was wrecked on the waters of Shandong and drafted on the coast of Biin-hyun(庇仁縣) of Chungcheong(忠淸) Province of Korea. The court of Choseon saved and returned them to Qing China. Xu Biji, the owner of the ship of red head was from now Denghai Qianbucun. He worked as a crew of ship of red head coming and going between Thailand and China and later became a ship owner.
He went to Bangkok in Thailand after drafting on the coast of Choseon and open Taiwanchang hang(泰萬昌行) as his base shop for the full-scale foreign management. Later on, he opened Binglongchang hang(炳隆昌行) in Thailand, Taishunchang hang(泰順昌行) in Hongkong, Taiyichang hang(泰怡昌行) in Shantou(汕頭) and Taiwanchang piju(泰萬昌批局) in his homeland and managed to collect, sale commodities, to do post service and to send money. He died in Bangkok and buried there in 1927.
There remained old buildings established by Xu in his homeland. A house in which Xu and his family lived, a private school named Xiyuanxiaozhu(西園筱築), a shop named Taiwanchang piju were built on the east side of Zhuxia chi(竹下池) and Huaishigongci(懷實公祠), Laopiguanzutihng(老批館祖廳), Xianghneigongting(巷內公廳) were established on west side.
There is a monument to the memory of overseas Chinese in Thailand who offered a relief fund for the damage from wind on the second of August on the bank of Han River(韓江) in front of Qianbucun. We might see there the names of Taiwanchang hang and Xu Shaofeng(許少峰), grandson of Xu Biji.
The story and relics relating Xu's draft on the coast of Choseon were trahnsmitted in Xu's family. It is told that Xu brought uneaten Chosen ginseng for famine food dring drafting on Korea. But the ginseng was actually that one he bought in Yingkou(營口) of Liaodong(遼東) Province. The statue of Mazu(媽祖) which was brought by Xu when he returned from drafting is preserved in Xiangneigongting.
