- zophenon-3 and Ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate. As consumption of UV-blocking cosmetics increases, EDCs-relatedhealthconcernshavebeenalsoraised.ThisstudyinvestigatedthenumbersofUV-blocking cosmetic products by the harmful chemicals contained in them. A database of UV-blocking cosmetics chemicals has been built using the internet application "Hwahea" which contains product information for almostallcosmeticsinKoreanmarket(asofMay2019).Weclassifiedthehazardlevelofeachchemical based on EWG (Environmental Working Group; high, mid, and low hazard group), TEDx (The Endocrine DisruptionExchange)andthelist of allergy-inducingsubstancesdesignatedbytheMinistryof Foodand Drug Safety, Korea (KFDA). A total of 7,908 (99%) out of 7,940 products included more than one harmfulchemical.Ofthe2,415ingredientslabeledasasortofextract,5,18,and996wereclassifiedand high,mid,lowhazardgroup,respectively.TherestofextractshadnohazardinformationavailableinEWG. Thenumbersof productscontainingtitaniumdioxideandzincoxidethat physicallyblockUVwere7,102 and3,985respectively. Therewere164products containingbenzophenones, whichis awell-knownEDC andhasbeenwidelyusedinUV-blockingcosmetics.Thenumberofharmfulchemicalsperproductranged from1to 19. Considering thetarget consumer groups of products, thenumber of harmful chemicalsper productwaslowerintheproductsforchildrenwithanaverageof2,whilethatis4fortheproductsfor general population. 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, listed as a high hazard in EWG, was contained in the mostproducts(n=398).ItsuggeststhatUV-blockingcosmeticsstillneedsmoreattentionforsaferuse.
