- Abstract
- Purpose: Beliefs play a critical role in the foundation of behavior according to the theory of planned behavior. The purpose of the study is to investigate behavioral, normative, and control beliefs toward participating in disability sports competition among individuals with physical disabilities.
Method: Participants were 111 individuals with physical disabilities in A and C city. Questionnaires consisting of open-ended questions were used to gather beliefs among the participants. Responses were coded and content-analyzed into three types of belief categories. Content analysis was conducted with a panel of experts.
Results: The participants most often mentioned that six consequences (determined salient behavioral beliefs) occurred when participating in disability sport competition. Regarding normative belief, the most frequently mentioned individuals or groups who influenced the participants’ decisions were three types. Further, the participants with physical disabilities believed there were six factors that facilitate or impede participation in disability sport competition.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the cognitive foundation of participating in disability sports competitions were associated with their beliefs on the positive consequences (i.e., psychological benefits of sport), the social expectation from significant people (i.e., parents, friends), and the barrier or facilitators (i.e., competency of performance, governmental support).
