Abstract
The purpose of this study was to plan the small group activity (SGA) for the general English reading class and investigate the influence of SGA on English reading ability from 117 college freshmen, using both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The SGA in this study encouraged the cooperation in the small group during the reading class combined with Nuttall`s reading teaching sequence, Learning Together and Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition for 15 weeks. An English reading comprehension test and an English reading motivation questionnaire were used to measure the effect of the SGA on English reading ability. The findings of quantitative data analysis using t-test showed that the SGA class(n=60) attained significantly improved reading comprehension test result and motivation than the teacher-fronted class (n=57) which used Nuttall`s reading teaching sequence only. The qualitative data analysis of one open-ended question revealed the student`s preference for the SGA. This study suggests that the SGA be used in the general English reading college classes to improve teaching and learning effects by arousing students’ motivation for reading comprehension.
