- Abstract
- Investigations were performed on macrobenthic community of Asan Bay, mid-western
coast of Korea, Yellow Sea, from April 2000 to January 2001. Macrobenthic fauna
consisted of 46 species with 1,846 individuals. The number of species and occurring
frequency of the major groups were as follows: polychaete species (45.7%), molluscs
species (23.9%), crustacean species (13.0%), echinoderm species (6.5%) and other group
species (10.9%). The mean density was 46.2inds./m2. The dominant species were
Prionospio sp. (Polychaetes), Ruditapes philippinarum (Bivalvia), Tharyx sp. (Polychaetes),
Lumbrineris longifolica (Polychaetes), L. cruzensis (Polychaetes). The inner bay and
coastal area of the bay were characterized by the occurence in the areas of high
organic pollution and opportunistic species. Based on the topography of the bay and
sediment types, the study area is easily divided into two zones; inner bay and outward
bay area. It was evident from these results that species number and diversity have
decreased, while dominance and pollution indicator species have increased. From this
study, it may be concluded that a variation in the macrobenthic community of the
study area was triggered by environmental changes.
