Abstract
In a manufacturing field, a large number of manual tasks are performed by using a thumb pressing force requiring sometimes up to 17kg. Moreover, due to these tasks have many repetitions, many workers are complaining of thumb pain and constantly demanding better working conditions. However, there is no guideline for risk evaluation of the thumb-pressing task. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop the guideline for the thumb-pressing task based on the thumb-pressing force level and the number of repetitions. The guideline for the ‘appropriate thumb-pressing force level’ was developed based on the concept of endurance time; and for the ‘appropriate number of repetitions’ the subjective discomfort rating (Borg’s CR-10 Scale) was applied. As a result, it is possible to easily quantify the risk level of the thumb-pressing task by evaluating the thumb-pressing forces and repetitions, and also possible to clearly categorize risk level into 6 levels.
