- Abstract
- Emotional development is the one of the most important developmental tasks in childhood, since it is the baseline of children’s integrated personality development. Parents’ accurate recognition of children’s emotional states and their rational reaction are fundamental to children’s emotional development. However, it is difficult to recognize nonverbal expressions and subjective, momentary emotions. Recently, numerous research has been conducted on recognition and quantification of humans’ various emotional changes, and they are being applied to many related fields. As a basic research, the present study sought to introduce an emotion measurement system to childhood education institutes, and conducted a survey on mothers’ recognition of their children’s emotions and the needs for the introduction of an emotion recognition system. The results showed that 91.5% of parents with infants expressed difficulties with recognition of their infants’ emotions. In contrast, only 46.9% of parents with young children expressed difficulties with recognition of their young children’s emotions. When asked how often they wonder about their children’s emotions at childhood education institutes, 80.2% of parents with infants replied that they were curious at least once a day. 44.8% of parents with young children replied that they were curious at least once a day. To questions regarding why they wonder about their children’s emotions at childhood education institutes, concerns over bad things happening to the children comprised the highest percentage. There was a higher need for the emotion measurement and assessment system among parents with infants compared to parents with young children. As for the price of the service, most parents with both infants and young children replied that 5,000 won was reasonable. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers. All rights reserved.
