Abstract
In traditional Korean culture, conflict is something to be avoided at all costs since its very presence is a barrier to social harmony, the basis of Korean culture. However, in reality, Korean society is going through various kinds of conflict in almost every social context. One such context is family. This study presents a case analysis that takes a close look at a case of conflict in a Korean family to show changes in traditional Korean culture, and to identify the sources and interactive patterns of the conflict investigated. Grounded in the theoretical assumption that family is the transmitter of (both traditional and new) culture, special attention was paid to the role and place of Korean cultural values and beliefs, as opposed to counter (non-traditional) values and beliefs, in the formation, maintenance and development of conflicts. Specifically, identified and presented in detail were specific ways in which the two contrasting cultures, Korean and North American, were conflicting with each other in a Korean family. The primary corpus of data for this study, lined with the theoretical orientation that joint action carried on in families, relationships, community meetings, and institutions is where to look for an understanding of who we are and what is going on in human life, was stories told and lived by all the people involved in the conflict examined.
