- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different intensity aerobic exercise trainingon metabolic syndrome risk factor and heart rate recovery in women with abdominal obesity. Twenty-fourparticipants(age 39.1±4.0 years; waist circumference of =85 cm) were randomized to equal volumes of eithercontinuous moderate exercise(60% of VO2max) or aerobic interval training(80% of VO2max) 3 times a week for12 weeks. In addition, both groups were encouraged to maintain daily caloric intake and physical activity as usual.
VO2max, heart rate recovery of 1 minute immediately after peak exercise test, waist circumference, blood pressure, lipid profiles, glucose, and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance were measured at baseline, at themid-point and after the exercise program. The main results of the study were as follows. With respect tometabolic risk factors, the moderate-intensity exercise group had a significantly higher improvement(p<0.001) inwaist circumference than the high-intensity exercise group. The high-intensity exercise group had a significantlyhigher improvement(p=0.022) in cardiorespiratory fitness than the moderate-intensity exercise group. Regarding oftraining intensity, heart rate recovery response were tended to increase following the training programs. It wasconcluded that both moderate- and high-intensity exercise training would induce significant improvements in severalof metabolic risk factors and heart rate recovery in women with abdominal obesity.
