- Abstract
- Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is a common method for energy conservation for portable devices. As the portable devices are playing multimedia data, reducing energy consumption is getting important. However, it is difficult to apply conventional DVS algorithms to multimedia applications because the amount of data that needs to be handled in time varies. In this paper, we propose a new DVS algorithm which considers the workload of streaming video and consumes less energy than non-DVS method or conventional DVS algorithms while maintaining the quality of service. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can achieve higher quality of display of MPEG streaming video than conventional DVS algorithms while consuming 12.5% less energy than non-DVS methods. © 2008 IEEE.
